Day 4

By rnolden

Greetings from Cincinnati.

On Thursday, 226 students came through the clinic.  Of the 226 students, 210 of them will receive glasses.  The grand total of students for the week through Thursday is 994... only 6 away from our goal for the entire week.

After the students were through, the clinic team received One Sight pins and then packed into the vans to roll up to the CSC for a tour.  On the tour, we saw the retail store, the mason-ette, the recycle center and the entire 2nd floor.  We learned a lot of new things about One Sight while hanging out in the recycle (or resource) center.  Did you know that half a million glasses have gone through there this year?  Amazing!  After a couple hours at the CSC, we drove down the street to BD's Mongolian BBQ for a whole meal of food.  GOOD STUFF!

The home stretch has begun and for many of us it has come far too soon.  As a group, we will help over 1000 students and create relationships that will last a lifetime.

15 Schools - Day 3

By rnolden

The team is wrapping up production for day 3.  Today, we saw 264 students from 15 schools.  Things continue to run smoother and smoother as everyone becomes more comfortable with all facets of the clinic process.  Lunch was provided by Chic-fil-a and was gone in an hour!  There was a huge turnout of volunteers today from the CSC and local field stores.  We will be debriefing shortly and hitting the vans to head back to the hotel.  Tonight, the team has a free night to explore Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

The last student today commented that his Dad couldn't afford the glasses that he picked out.  He was relieved to know that the glasses would be free of charge!

Giving the gift of sight feels oh so good!

Story Time

By rnolden

After helping in the frame room for two hours today, I took a walk down the hallway to grab a drink.  While I was on my way down the hall, a 3rd grader jumped out of line and grabbed my arm.  As his teacher began to yell at him, he pulled me down to his level and whispered, "I can't wait to get my glasses, thank you".  It was pretty cool to see him make an effort to jump out of line and make sure he told me how appreciative he was.  Its stories like this one that make this experience worth while.

Cincinnati Clinic Day 2

By rnolden

Another day has come and gone.  We had another successful day, helping 228 students.  Our grand total after the first two days is 526 students!  Day 2 brought another early morning.  We left the hotel at 7:15 and arrived at the museum center to dive in.  Many of the schools that came to see us were on a 2 hour delay due to the cold weather, but we were still able to get through every student.  Lunch was from LaRosas providing many of the out of towners with a little Cincinnati flavor.  The day at the clinic ended at 4:30 when we boarded the vans to head back to the hotel.  For dinner, the team walked a couple hundred yards to Don Pablos.  The popular dish was the all you can eat taco plate... another amazing meal.  After dinner, we got together in the hotel for our silent auction to help raise money for the clinic.  The auction items varied from Canadian memoribilia to Oakley frames, to hand made ornaments and jewelry.  At the end of the night, the auction raised $1350!  After spending some money, it was off to bed for some much needed rest for our busiest day of the week.

Day 3 will be very busy, with a larger number of students and volunteers.  The team is fired up and ready to continue giving the gift of sight.

Until next time... Cinci Rocks!

Cincinnati Clinic Day 1

By rnolden

Day 1 is in the books.  We saw 298 students, which made for an amazing first day!  It was great to see so many people from so many different backgrounds come together and make the day such a huge success.  The day started bright and early, with breakfast at 6:30 am followed by our short commute to the museum center at 7.  After a brief orientation and walk through of the facility, we dove right in.  The day went by quickly with a short break for Jersey Mikes Subs at lunch time.  We finished at 3:30 and took a tour of the Musem Center.  We got to see the backbones of the building and learn how such an amazing place operates.  After the tour it was time for dinner at Pompillios Italian Restaraunt.  MMMMM IT WAS DELICIOUS!  Then it was back to the hotel to prepare for another exciting day.

Until next time... You stay classy, Cincinnati
