Clinic Day 3
By hwertman
Our passion is giving the gift of sight and that is what the team in Minneapolis is delivering. The community has embraced this mission with sincere gratitude and appreciation. I think the thing that has unexpectectedly touched the team is the feedback the team has received from the community. Our bus driver...citizens in the neighborhood...the mantenance team at the building...all thanked the OneSight team for their efforts and commitments to the children in North Minneapolis.
On Wednesday, Renee was speaking with the kids from one of the schools and a little boy asked, "Wait a minute, you're here for us? You all are here just for us?" The child was so surprised that there was a group of people that were there because they cared for him and his friends so much.
Nicole from the Target home office spent some time with us on Wednesday. She had heard of the OneSight program, but didn't have the emotional connection. On Wednesday, Nicole helped about a hundred children pick out their eyewear while watching their faces light up. Nicole then went into the lab and manufactured her first pair of eyewear! Even better, she dispensed the pair of eyewear to a child who was excited to receive them.
Rhonda had a connection with a teenager who has seen other kids around him get glasses but was afraid to wear glasses himself. He thought they would "hurt". Rhonda had the opportunity to have a conversation that influenced the teenager to put the glasses on. Although he was concerned, he wanted to be like the other kids around him who were happy to have the gift of sight. He listened, took the leap of faith because he believed in Rhonda, and wore those glasses out with pride and a smile!

Minneapolis Clinic Day One and Two
By hwertman
Congratulations Team Minneapolis! We had a successful start to our week long clinic. Our culturally diverse group certainly came in handy! We have experienced situations where we were lucky to have their language skills assist with the exam process. Foreign languages, such as Hmong and Spanish, have been used repeatedly over the last two days. Blai, a coordinator from Target Optical in Colorado, has helped multiple families with her native language from Thailand. She had an instant connection with two children named Amy and Ryan. They held her hand and looked up to her throughout the day!
Jaycee, a 7 year old recipient, cracked up the group in the auto-refraction area, when he opened his mouth – super wide – when he was asked to open wide. “Your eyes, Jaycee…your eyes! Silly boy!” Jen said with laughter.
Allen, an 11 year old, told Michelle, “I really want glasses. I think I really need them.” Turns out he had a -6.50 cylinder in both eyes! Yes, Allen was right! He really needed them.
Tracy dispensed a pair of glasses yesterday that touched everyone that was watching. A stylish pair of glasses was given to a teenage boy named Bradley, whose mother reacted with tears and hugs for everyone. “Bradley’s face lit up! And his mom wouldn’t let me go! She was hugging me so hard because she was so sincerely grateful! I texted everyone I know to share the story with them. My heart just melts thinking about it.”
Stay tuned for more stories to come!
On a bonding note the team went to dinner at Bullfrogs in downtown Minneapolis. The food was great especially the fried pickles which had a tasty peanut butter dipping sauce. Yummy! Some enjoyed the warm weather with an evening excursion on bikes to the popular sculpture garden to enjoy the city's commitment to Art in public places!
