OneSight Research Foundation Awards Four Grants
The OneSight Research Foundation supports optical research and education, granting more than $250,000 annually toward vision research focused on diabetic eye diseases and offering thousands of dollars in scholarships to students pursuing a degree in Optometry. Last month the Board awarded $106,000 to four organizations that support diabetic retinopathy research. Diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes, is the leading cause of adult blindness. Grant recipients included Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Retina Foundation of the Southwest, the Talking Information Center and the University of Texas Medical Branch.
- Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston received a $25,000 grant to support Sule Cataltepe, MD’s study, “Diabetic Retinopathy & Fatty Acid Binding Protein 4.” The study seeks to understand the mechanisms responsible for a specific protein shown to protect the growth of abnormal retinal vessels and assess if they can recreate the effect of this protein by using a selective chemical inhibitor.
- The Retina Foundation of the Southwest in Dallas received a $25,000 to support Yi-Zhong Wang, PhD’s study “Development and Evaluation of a New Handheld System for Remote Visual Function Monitoring of Diabetic Retinopathy.” This study will develop a new macular perimetry test on an iPad for evaluation of visual function across the macula.
- Talking Information Center in Marshfield, MA received $6,000 to underwrite the Diabetes Medical Update educational radio show for one year. This program allows those affected by diabetes to learn about specifics of the condition, how to prevent further vision loss and steps to take to stay healthy and informed.
- The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston received a $50,000 grant to support Bernard Godley’s MD, PhD’s, research, “Photokenetic Ocular Drug Delivery.” This project aims to develop a needleless approach to the eye by using pulses of light to facilitate delivery of drugs across tissue in patients with diabetic retinopathy.
