Sears Optical Screens More Than 1,500 in Wilmington

Sears Optical hosted a OneSight Clinic in Wilmington, Ohio, February 24. The Clinic kicked off Sears Optical Family Eye Health Month, which takes place in March. Wilmington was selected because of the recent closing of DHL, the region’s largest employer. Thousands in this small town lost their jobs when DHL closed its express cargo delivery hub.

The OneSight Vision Van was on site and Sears Optical had 57 volunteers at the event. The team provided vision screenings to 1,579 students and referred 196 for follow-up care. Sixty students received eye exams and of those, 48 received eyewear.

One student, Savannah, was having trouble seeing the board in school. The school contacted Savannah’s mother, Jackie, right away to get permission to have her seen on the Vision Van the same day.

Jackie came to the school to pick up Savannah and take her to the nearby high school for an eye exam. When she spoke to the volunteers, she was touched to the point of tears that there was a program that could help her family. She was one of the many who lost their jobs when DHL closed. Jackie had suspected Savannah needed eyewear since both she and her older daughter wore eyewear, however, she did not know where she was going to get the money. The team ended up seeing both Jackie and her daughters, and providing eyewear for all three.
